6 ways bikers can improve their visibility on the road

If you own a motorcycle, you already understand that bikes come with more safety risks than passenger vehicles. However, there is nothing quite like getting out and enjoying a ride on the open road.

Fortunately, there are ways you can minimize some of the safety risks that come with riding a motorcycle. Understanding the cause of most crashes is a good starting point to help you take appropriate safety precautions.

Why do motorcycle crashes happen?

Motorcycle crashes can occur for a variety of reasons, but a large number of these crashes occur when other drivers fail to see a motorcycle. Drivers may not see motorcycles because bikes are so much smaller than the other vehicles on the road and bikes can easily disappear in a car’s blind spot. However, some drivers may also fail to see a motorcycle because they are distracted or didn’t bother to look for one.

How can bikers protect themselves from this type of crash?

All motorist have a responsibility to behave safely on the road, but it can be difficult to control other people’s actions. Although you may not be able to make other motorist’s pay attention, you can take steps to protect yourself when you are on a ride.

You may improve your safety by:

  • Driving defensively
  • Being especially cautious in intersections
  • Positioning yourself to be seen
  • Using headlights every time you ride
  • Avoiding unpredictable movements
  • Wearing bright or reflective clothing that is also durable

Although you may not be able to control the actions of other motorists, that does not mean that other motorists are free to disregard the safety of others. If a reckless or negligent driver causes a crash, it may be reasonable to hold that driver accountable for their actions. It may be possible to receive compensation for your medical expenses and other costs associated with the crash.
